What is the electronic signature?

Electronic DNI: DNIe

With Law 59/2003, of 19 December, on electronic signature, the electronic DNI (Spanish National Identity) becomes a reality and several advantages are a result of it:

The fact that there is a private key only known by its owner enables:

  • The creation of a document that certifies the identity of the citizen not only in the physical world, but also in telematic transactions, being able to sign all kinds of electronic documents. By using a safe signature creation device, the electronic signature created with the electronic DNI will have the equivalente effects as those of a handwritten signature.
  • Issuing an electronic DNI in only one administrative act, hence reducing the time spent to obtain it.
  • Interoperability with European digital identification projects.
  • Promoting trust in electronic transactions.
  • Acceptance of the use of the electronic DNI by all Public Administrations and Public Law Organisations pertaining to or dependant on the same. (Eg. for the annual income tax declaration, to ask for a census certificate, registering a birth or claim the right to a pension).

The Spanish electronic National Indentity Document has a similar appearance to that of a credit card, and it is the Public Identity Certificate that will give the capacity to identify citizens, as well as to allow them to sign electronic documents. This certificate will be included in the DNI, an apart from identifying the citizen (authentication), it will guarantee that the information has not been altered (integrity) and that the citizen has carried out the transaction (non-rejection).
